Memory, Institutions, and the Domestic Politics of South Korean–Japanese Relations

چکیده
Abstract How does collective memory shape politics in the domestic and international spheres? I argue that memory—an intersubjective understanding of past—has no inherent meaning its salience is entirely contextual. What it means politically depends on historical trajectory through which came to form political exigency for mobilized present. propose three strategies by social actors mobilize memory: framing—negotiating how past can be interpreted; accrediting—redefining narrators are authorized speak; binding—enforcing narrative bounds must conform. Using this framework, reassess failure South Korea–Japan reconciliation find has as much do with mobilization colonial Korea over course democratization Japanese impenitence.
